Lewis County, WV was formed in 1816 from parts of Harrison & Randolph Counties.  The significance of this is that if you are looking for records pre-dating 1816, you need to look in one of these other Counties.

The Lewis County Gen Web Page (http://www/rootsweb.com/~wvlewis/) has many valuable resources listed, including the addresses of where to write for certificates.

I'm going to take a different approach than I have before.  I'm going to list what Casto families I know of that lived in Lewis County, list some source material, and let people who see this and have other info to add contact me at Danita@castoconnections.com.

The earliest Casto marriage in Lewis County was for Andrew Casto to Rachel Cutright in 1828 so we're going to start with them and see where it leads.  The marriages listed on the next page list 23 Lewis Co. Casto marriages.  How many were tied to Andrew & Rachel?  Let's see...

1850 Lewis Co. Census:

Casto, Andrew         40
       Rachel         45
       Simon          21
       Perry          19
       Barbara        17
       Lucretia       17
       Henry          15
       Rachel E.      13
       Marietta       11
       Elmore          8

If we only use the census records, it immediately becomes complicated because by the time of the 1860 census, Andrew is no longer listed and Rachel is listed in Upshur, not Lewis County.    please hit next to continue...
