Naomi Maxine CARNEY
RED HOUSE - Naomi Maxine Carney, 66, of Red House died Oct. 16, 1997, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a long illness. She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. Surviving: daughters, Diana Fay Thomas of Red House, Joan Elaine Newman of Titusville, Fla., Susie Gay Smith of Bidwell, Ohio, Barbara Jo Hedrick of Eleanor; sisters, Mary CASTO of Eleanor, Doris Cochran of Ripley, Ruby Adkins of Winfield, Betty Smalley of Paradise; brothers, Arlis Thornton of Vinton, Ohio, Rockford Thornton of Fraziers Bottom, Luther "Junior" Thornton of Kenna; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Nile Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Elva M. CASTO CARPENTER
Elva M. CASTO Carpenter, 75, of Nitro died May 25, 1999, at home after a long illness. She was a former employee of Cohen Drug and Avtex Fibers, Nitro. She was a member of Nitro Church of Christ and a lifelong resident of Nitro. Surviving: sons, Larry and Gary, both of Poca, Steve of Nitro; sisters, Lorena Penlend of Laurel, Md., Ida Faye CASTO of Washington; brothers, Ralph CASTO of Nitro, Okey CASTO of Teays Valley, Glenner and Russell CASTO, both of Ripley; six grandchildren; four great- grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Nitro Church of Christ with Minister Marvin Green and Minister Mason Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. A. Jeanne Casto, age 79, of Millersport, Oh., passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Licking Memorial Hospital. Born June 23, 1921 in Columbus, Oh. to the late Delmont Markins and Ruth (Nagle) Markins. She was a graduate of Mifflin High School, Class of 1940. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert J. Casto; son, Brent J. (Sharon) Casto of Hebron; daughter, Cheryl (Rodger) Revercomb of Canon City, Colo.; grandchildren, Megan (John) Bruzzese, Dublin, Shannon Revercomb, Newark, Devon (rest not shown on-line) (The Columbus Dispatch Sep. 29, 2000)
Dr. Absolom Harpold CASTO
Dr. Absolom Harpold CASTO died at his home at Sandyville at 6 o'clock Thursday evening, July 31, aged 70 years. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, Rev. C. C. PERKINS of Ravenswood Methodist Episcopal Church, South, officiating. The remains were interred in the Independence Cemetery. Dr. CASTO, the son of Levi CASTO, was born on the old homestead on the Charleston Pike. He volunteered in the Confederate Army in 1861 and was a Sergeant in Company G., 17th Virginia Cavalry, commanded by Judge V. S. ARMSTRONG. He was wounded while in camp near Winchester, Virginia, losing one of his limbs. Upon recovery from the wound he entered Roanoke College, Salem, Virginia, he studied medicine with the late Dr. HOYT of Ravenswood, and later entered Miami Medical College of Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating in 1870. He then located at Sandyville and practiced medicine for forty years. His death was due to Bright's Disease and came after many months of suffering. Dr. CASTO was married twice, his first wife being Miss Frances P. DAWKINS, three children survive this marriage. Mrs. Estella Willia FONTAINE, who resides in Charleston, Mrs. Frances F. BURDETT and Mrs. Gertrude THORNBURG, of Huntington. Dr. CASTO's second wife was Miss Gertrude MCGEE, of Wood County, who survives him. Four brothers, George CASTO of Ravenswood, D. C. CASTO of Parkersburg, and F. A. and C. C. CASTO of Ripley, also survive. Dr. CASTO was a great soldier, a useful citizen and a devoted father and husband. He was held in the highest esteem by the medical profession and was loved by the people with whom he lived and for whom he labored for so many years. (Mountaineer, 8 Aug 1913)
Ada Riffee CASTO Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Moss Chapel Church for Mrs. Ada (Riffee) CASTO, 59, wife of T. J. CASTO, who died at her home in Dunbar on Sunday after a long illness. Those surviving are: the husband, T. J. CASTO; three sons, Oshel CASTO of Given, and Carl and Junior CASTO at home; three daughters, Mrs. W. W. Lovejoy of Tyler Mountain, Mrs. E. P. Burgess and Mrs. Guy Barnett of Dunbar; five brothers, F. H. and R. C. Riffee of Given, E. H. Riffee of Charleston, E. E. and O. C. Riffee of Dunbar; three sisters, Mrs. Allie Riffee and Mrs. Edgar Fisher of Liberty, and Mrs. M. W. Monday of Dunbar, WV.
